Does your dog bark, tremble or try to hide when you take them into town or walk past other people? You’re not alone - lots of dogs feel overwhelmed in busy spaces, and it’s not something they just “grow out of”.
But the good news? With a bit of patience and the right approach, you can help your dog feel more confident and relaxed.
Start where your dog is comfortable
Instead of diving into a busy café or bustling market, find somewhere quieter to begin. Maybe it’s a car park or a bench near a park. The idea is to let your dog observe the world without being in the middle of it.
Pair people and dogs with good things
Every time a person or another dog appears, offer your dog a treat. You’re helping them build a positive connection - “When I see people, something nice happens!”
Keep sessions short and sweet
Ten calm minutes are better than an hour of stress. Don’t worry if progress feels slow - confidence is built in tiny steps, not big leaps.
Give them something to do
Teaching simple tricks like “touch” or “look at me” gives your dog a job to focus on. It helps them feel more in control and builds trust in you.
Avoid forcing interactions
Well-meaning strangers often want to say hello, but it’s okay to say, “No thanks, we’re in training.” Protecting your dog’s space shows them you’ve got their back.
